I am really thankful for social media and especially SU those make it easier for almost anybody to spread the word and deliver their message to the world for free and in no time.

Few years ago, the best you can do for your story is to syndicate a press release and cross your fingers hoping that some news paper correspondent pick it and republish it, or may be one of those big news websites give it the exposure that you want. Social media provides us with very good chance to have at least hundreds of people reading any story we write, up to thousands if we are lucky enough to hit some big social media website’s home page.
Why SU should be your first social media website to start promoting your story?
- Assuming you use digg, the best you can get if you don’t have a big network of friends or don’t have enough digs for your story is to get less than ten visitors to your story.
- Delicious, is almost the same, for average stories.
- Redit is a little better with 30 visits sometimes

But with SU, for almost any new story you will have a chance to get from 100-500 visits, SU has really very good mechanism in promoting new stories for even new low popularity members. Unlike other social media websites those don’t give your story any initial boost (unless you ask some friends help), SU will show your story for stumblers those are interested in your story topic in the next few hours followed your submission, so if your story is good enough, you will get more and more thumbs up and may be you will hit the buzz page and get amassing exposure, even though the worst scenario is having average story and get few hundreds visits. SU I love you..

I understand how much it is hard to handle millions of daily requests when you have a website with massive traffic like StumbleUpone, what also makes it harder is getting millions of automated requests by bots, spammers and some DOS attack, however that doesn’t justify the low performance of SU servers in the last week.

If you want to be one of the big web players like; “I wouldn’t say Google or Yahoo”, at least the social medial players like Digg or Facebook you need to have fast servers.

I n the internet sphere the hard part to get some success is to get the good idea, then spread it and eventually get the audiences, hardware problems should not be a reason to lose your audiences, especially we are living now in a days these you can easily get hundreds of servers with powerful T1 lines connected with affordable prices, even for small to medium companies.

I hope SU IT team will figure out as soon as possible how to handle the increased daily requests, and be prepared for more, keeping in mind that Facebook is having 150 000 new users daily.

I have clicked my stumble button 100 successive times in one session, and I have noticed that about 95% of the pages SU returns were added in categories of my interests. So if you want to write a Stumble worthy story make sure that it falls under a category with enough audiences or if you have a story that fits tow categories, make sure that you go for the more popular one.

How to know the most popular categories ? SU makes it easy for you through the tag cloud on the home page, simply the bigger is more popular.

You may ask yourself are not the popular categories getting more new stories and eventually my chance will be the same if I submit to a low popularity category will less new stories, theoretically that looks right but practically and after many experiments I find out that submitting to the popular categories is far better that low popularity ones. If you try this and find more to add on to this post please feel free to do

Best regards

- The widget gets updated two times a day through cronjob, so the numbers are always fresh.
- You can include this widget in your blog, Facebook, Myspace and more, Just hover the widget and you will see a button says copy me, click it for inclusion options.I would link to thank yourminis for the nice widget, I think this is the best to view your RSS feed.
Enjoy

I have noticed by chance that word “Fan” follows the number of fans for some stumblers, but for other stumblers the word “Fans” follows the number of fans. My be this is not a big deal and it does not even worth a blog post but curiosity kills the cat!

Ok after some investigations I think I know what is the problem .. it is most likely a bug in SU was caused by wrong comparison in PHP.

I think what happened is that the programmers in SU are using some thing like this to append the word “Fan” or “Fans”

<?

if ($fans > 1) {

print “fans” ;

else {

print “fan” ;

}

But the issue is that the programmers left the variable $fans without stripping the coma “,” so the comparison will be done on the number to the left of the coma “,” the numbers to the right will be ignored in this case .. so in this case stumblers with 2-999 fans and +2,000 fans are ok your will see “fans” follows their fans number .. But stumblers with 1,000-1,999 fans will see “fan” follows their fans number.

FANS

FAN

As I mentioned in a previous post, the number of fans you have in your profile plays a crucial role in getting more exposure for your new story, and no matter why you are using Stumbleupon, getting more exposure for your story should be one of your goals.

So more exposure for your profile page has two benefits:

1- People may add you to their friend list and eventually that will help you to get more traffic for your stories.

2- Your favorites will have more exposure which means more traffic for your story.

Before telling you the trick I need to tell you a reality; the buzz page of Stumbleupon gets the highest traffic on the website, the reason behind that is very simple : “Each stumbler has a direct button to the buzz page through his own profile”

If you checked this page carefully you will see a clickable avatar beside each of the top stories, and if you look inside the story’s page you will find that this avatar doesn’t belong necessarily to the story discoverer, if you carefully review those avatars and match them with the story page you will find that this avatar belongs to one of those written a reviesion on the story page (not just stumble the story).

The question now is how does stumble decide which avatar to have beside each story between those written a reveiosn .. As mentioned before you need to write a revision about the story, but the second important factor is to have a long reveision

So go to the buzz page and write a reveisio, try to make it as long as possible with less spam, taking in account that stumbleupon has a button to evaluate each review.

I hope guys you will use this trick to add more value to Stumbleupon not to increase the spam load on Stumbleupon

The first question may be should be how can your website get traffic from Stumbleupon, the first step for that is to be stumbled (thumbs up) by a member, but is that enough ? let me tell you where is the possibilities for your website to get traffic from stumble and then we can discuss how to increase this traffic

The best way to get massive traffic from stumble upon it to make it to the buzz page http://buzz.stumbleupon.com/ this page enjoy a lot of traffic since it has a direct button from each member page, so being their means getting a lot of visitors. There are many factors to be on this page, but the most important of them is getting big thumbs up from the stumblers (the history of the stumblers play role in that – How much time they have been stumbling, number of websites in their favorite)

     What is new tab: each member has a tab called “What’s new”, this tab shows the latest stumbled website by your friend, so even if you couldn’t make it to the buzz page you still have a chance to get some traffic through this page in the first 24 hours

     People browsing your page/favorite/blog may be getting to them using their friends profile, or Stumbleupon directory or search etc.

The search box in stumble upon drives good traffic, so make sure always that you are using the proper tags.

So number 1-2-3 which are the massive source of traffic are totally depends on the number of friends those you have on your profile, and amount of popularity that you have in this community.

Just to let you know, you can’t have more than 200 friends with stumble upon (friends mean people those you added them to your friend list from your page), but you can get unlimited number of fans (fans are people those added you as a friend but you didn’t reciprocate)

So the question now how can I make fans/friends in Stumbleupon, unlike www.myspace.com where there are many software help you to that, it is not the same in Stumbleupon, you need to work for it, and as I don’t have a huge number of fans/friends, so I will try to have a super stumblers with thousands of fans blog about that very soon, so stay tuned

I think anybody reading blogs these days has notices that most bloggers have social bookmark button installed, I will try to cover the most popular plugin/buttons those do that.
I will start with www.addthis.com social bookmark button since it has stumbleupon button included beside many other popular social media websites .. I would go for this cause it is risk free one on your blog, you will not need to install it as a separate plug in, it is simply doing some changes to your theme files and that is it (they offer now a plug in for word press you can download it here http://s3.addthis.com/plugins/wordpress/v10/addthis_social_widget.zip and here is the dropdown version http://s3.addthis.com/plugins/wordpress/v12/addthis_social_widget_drop.zip )

First thing you need to do is sign up an account with www.addthis.com when you finish login to your account and then go to “Get the code for your widget!”
Which kind of widget? Bookmarking weidget
Which wedget ? it is up to you but I would go with the second one
Where ? on blog
Blogging platform ? Wordpress
Want Stats ? I would say yes
Then press get your wedget

You will have two choices but I would go for Blog Post Button .. that’s will make your visitors able to tag each blog separately
If you want to include the button below each post, simply copy-and-paste the code below into the ‘Main Index Template’ template, right before the end of the ‘< div class=”entry”>’ tag. Then save the changes.
If you have not set your file permissions to 666 for your themes file, simply download the index.php file from your main theme directory and do your changes using any text editor
