Stumbleupon is more than social bookmarking website but to make it easier for you as non Stumbler to understand what does really Stumbleupon is, let us explain it

Stumbleupon.com tracks the votes and then uses that information later when a user clicks on a stumble button on that same toolbar, stumble also This will take them to random webpages that other users have given a thumbs ups for.

The stumble button in Stumble toolbar doesn’t actually randomly take you to a webpage, it uses:
-    The preference in your profiles especially your interests
-    The interests of your friends
-    What kind of websites your are stumbling (tags are important)
-    The behavior of your friends will play a role in what page Stumbleupon will take you the next time you click the stumble button in the tool bar
